Tile Calculator
Estimate the number of tiles and boxes needed for your tiling project
Enter the total area to be tiled (in square meters), the length and width of a single tile (in millimeters), the grout width, and your desired wastage percentage. Optionally, enter the number of tiles per box to see how many boxes you need. The calculator will estimate the total number of tiles and area covered.
The calculator uses the following formula:
- Tile Area = (Tile Length + Grout) × (Tile Width + Grout) (in meters)
- Tile Count = (Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Wastage ÷ 100)
- Boxes Needed = Tile Count ÷ Tiles per Box (if provided)
All results are rounded up to ensure you have enough tiles for your project.
- Tile size: Larger tiles cover more area, requiring fewer tiles.
- Grout width: Wider grout lines increase the area covered per tile.
- Wastage: More complex layouts or patterns require extra tiles.
- Box size: Tiles per box affect how many boxes you need to order.
- Floor and wall tiling
- Bathroom and kitchen renovations
- Outdoor patios and walkways
- Commercial and residential projects
- Order extra tiles for future repairs or replacements.
- Check all tiles for color and size consistency before installation.
- Plan your layout to minimize small cuts and waste.
- Store tiles in a dry, safe place until use.
How do I calculate the number of tiles needed?
The calculator divides the total area by the area of one tile (including grout), then adds your chosen wastage percentage and rounds up.
How much extra tile should I order for wastage?
A 10% allowance is typical for cuts and breakage. For complex layouts, consider 15% or more.
How do I use the tiles per box option?
Enter the number of tiles in one box to see how many boxes you need. Leave blank if you only want the tile count.
