How to use the calculator
Measure the length and width of the rectangular area you plan to fill in inches. Enter the glass depth allowed by your appliance and burner instructions, then enter the price per pound. A price of zero provides a quantity estimate without a purchase cost.
The five main results are fill area, estimated glass needed, your entered depth, estimated total weight, and glass cost. Glass needed and total weight are the same estimated mass, shown for ordering and load planning.
About decorative fire glass
This calculator concerns loose decorative media for a compatible gas fire pit or fireplace. It does not size a burner or calculate fire-rated glazing panels for walls, doors, and windows.
The existing coverage estimate is about 15 pounds per square foot at a 2-inch fill. Area = length × width ÷ 144 square feet; estimated pounds = length × width × depth ÷ 19.2, with dimensions in inches. This is an approximate coverage rule, not a universal glass density.
For a 24 × 24-inch area at 2 inches deep, the result is 4 square feet and 60 pounds. At $5 per pound, glass costs about $300 before tax and shipping. A manufacturer fire-glass guide uses a nearby but different divisor of 19 for its product; check your selected glass seller’s coverage chart.
Installation guidance
The depth shown in the results is the value you enter, not an installation recommendation. Follow the instructions for the chosen glass, appliance, burner, and fuel. For example, this propane match-light kit guide recommends no more than 2 inches of media above its burner. Other equipment can have different requirements.
Use the estimate for a rectangular fill. For circular or irregular shapes, first determine the actual fill area; the length × width rectangle may overstate it.
Care and ordering
Check the package mass before converting the estimate into bags. If the bags each contain 10 pounds, 60 pounds means six whole bags; a different package mass changes that count. The price result covers glass only.
Follow product instructions for handling and cleaning the media. The linked manufacturer guide describes rinsing its glass to remove dust and drying it before use; do not assume the same cleaning method applies to every product.
Frequently asked questions
What if I mix colors? Estimate the total mass first, then divide it among the colors in your chosen proportions.
How do I check the area or weight separately? Use the square footage calculator for an area check, or the glass weight calculator for solid glass objects. The latter models a different product.
How long does it last? Service life depends on the selected glass and how it is used and handled. Inspect the media and follow the seller’s replacement guidance for damaged pieces.
